Telluride Mountain School

The ninth-through twelfth-grade students adventured through Costa Rica in the spring of 2022. After navigating canceled flights and some challenging travel logistics, the students settled into a week of Spanish language school in Uvita, located on the southwestern Pacific coast. The students practiced communicating in Spanish while in the classroom, touring the small town, shopping at a local market, and helping to cook lunch. Throughout that week, they broke up their schoolwork with surfing lessons and adventurous hikes. Students transitioned to Corcovado National Park in the Osa peninsula and later in the trip for a three-day adventure in the rainforest with our guides, Rolando and Michael. Our group entered the park via the Los Patos trail through the rainforest and exited via Carate Beach. While in Corcovado, our group saw tapirs, scarlet macaws, spider monkeys, howler monkeys, white-faced “capuchin” monkeys, squirrel monkeys, coatis, anteaters, crocodiles, caymans, toucans, boa constrictors, fer-de-lance and boa constrictor snakes, leaf cutter ants, spiders, hummingbirds, and so much lush foliage. After our adventure in Corcovado, we returned to the San Jose area and rafted the magnificent Pacuare River.
