It is a privilege to serve as head at Telluride Mountain School. In the pages of this site, you will learn much about our exceptional community. TMS was founded by a small group of parents who wanted to create an extraordinary education for their children. Not only did they want top-notch academic instruction, but they believed that a carefully orchestrated set of experiences taking advantage of the mountains, rivers, and deserts of the Telluride region and engaging in the local community could leverage the school experience to inspire active, engaged, and committed students and citizens.
Today, the school continues that tradition of strong academics, outdoor and experiential education, and service learning. Over time, the school’s mission has been refined and extended to include a more global perspective, an internationally recognized curriculum in the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program, and a deeper understanding of the underpinnings of learning—including the importance of positive personal and interpersonal skills.
We live and attend school in an awe-inspiring setting and a lively, involved community. As students progress through the school, they also travel beyond our region’s boundaries and engage in powerful learning experiences around the world. We believe that our experiential program builds qualities that contribute to the success of our students, both in the classroom and in their future lives.
Of course, it is the people who make up a school, and at TMS, it is the care of each individual student that makes our success possible. From our small class sizes and low teacher-student ratios, to our close attention to developing the learning attitudes of our students, to the shared experiences among diverse groups of students and faculty, TMS places a strong emphasis on developing healthy and effective relationships and interpersonal skills. We believe those relationships and skills are at the core of our students’ ability, not only to know themselves, but to collaborate with others in school and in life.
I hope that you will take the time to browse the school’s website, become familiar with our community members, and explore our compelling programs for students of all ages. If you are new to the school, I look forward to meeting you and showing you our small but dynamic campus!
