Dear Students and Parents,
Thank you for visiting the Telluride Mountain School website. The Telluride Mountain School is located in the San Juan Mountains and for much of our school year, we are thrilled to call these beautiful surroundings our classrooms. Families seek out the Telluride Mountain School for the rich and unique educational experience that we provide.
The Telluride Mountain School was founded to deliver a program of challenging academics that promotes critical thinking, aesthetic expression, and ethical behavior. Hand in hand with these goals is our commitment to community service, global citizenship, and engagement with the natural environment. Top educators from around the country have been attracted to the teaching environment at TMS for the professional opportunity to combine a love of experiential learning with a rigorous college preparatory curriculum.
From the Lower School through to the Upper School the Telluride Mountain School curriculum develops confident students: creative thinkers, active readers, strong classroom contributors, and accomplished problem solvers. Telluride Mountain School students develop the ability to recognize important information, analyze the relationships among ideas, and bring together those ideas to bear on new situations.
At the Telluride Mountain School, we are proud of our community. We believe that children learn best in a school where they feel known and needed. From our small class sizes and our commitment to individual attention to our school-wide respect for children and the value of their voices, TMS students understand that this is their school, and they embrace their role as its stewards.
The curriculum that takes place within the walls of our architecturally unique school is half of what makes Telluride Mountain School one of the most exceptional educational opportunities in the United States. The Experiential Education program at Telluride Mountain School provides students with a unique balance between classroom work and field-based "Sense of Place" curricula. The program is a synthesis of three major components: outdoor adventure, cultural and natural immersion, and service learning. Fall programs emphasize teamwork, mountain activities, and a connection with the unique local region. Winter programs are designed around snow, winter ecology, and mountain safety education and include a full-season, on-mountain ski and snowboard Winter Sports Program. The spring programs incorporate desert and river travel, as well as a culminating trip to a regional or global location.
Please take a look at the many parts of the Telluride Mountain School program as outlined on our web site. If you are a family considering our school, please contact us for a visit to the school, which can be as informal as joining a Morning Meeting on Monday or Friday or as thorough as having your child spend the day as our guest.
Work hard, play hard,
