At the Ski Academy at Telluride Mountain School (TMS), healthy athletic pursuits are recognized and valued. Student-athletes are provided with a supportive platform and an inclusive, individualized plan from which to reach their potential both academically and athletically. TMS takes pride in enhancing the intrinsic determination of a committed athlete while simultaneously creating opportunities for academic success and growth through a rigorous, college preparatory program. TMS student-athletes pursue their passion for competition while remaining valued members of the school community.
Small class size allows individualized attention and encourages high levels of participation in academic work. Teachers expect students to perform and set high standards that encourage each student-athlete to challenge themselves in school as they do on the mountain. Students are responsible for maintaining their course work and have ample opportunities before and after each ski trip to work with teachers individually and create custom work plans to support their competitive schedule.
Ski Academy students participate in all aspects of school curriculum during the fall and spring trimester. This includes outdoor learning trips in the fall and an extensive trip in the spring. TMS students have visited Eastern Europe, Nepal, Peru, Costa Rica, Ecuador, and India in recent years.
The Ski Academy at TMS is fortunate to offer this program in partnership with one of the best ski and snowboard clubs in the country. Telluride Ski and Snowboard Club (TSSC) serves over 250 regional kids in seven winter sports disciplines including: Alpine, Freestyle Mogul, Freeride, All Mountain, Snowboard, Telemark, and Cross Country. Skiers and boarders range in age from five years old at an introductory level, to high school students and post-graduates vying for coveted US Ski Team spots. Three former TSSC athletes (Joe Discoe, moguls, Gus Kenworthy, Freeride ,and Hagan Kearney, Snowboard) are currently skiing for the US National Team. TSSC coaching staff comprises some of the best in the industry in each of the disciplines.
TSSC offers extensive fall training camps on snow, in Europe and around the state, as well as year-round, dry land training sessions. As the ski season approaches, teachers and coaches work individually with athletes to create athletic goals and a balanced academic schedule that includes specific accommodations for training and travel needs.
Telluride Ski Resort (TSR) further supports the athlete. TSR also recognizes the importance of supporting local athletes, and they continue to offer discounted rates for season passes for student-athletes. The Mountain boasts short lift lines and a diversity of world-class terrain that includes dedicated training venues. The Ski Club and TSR maintain a mogul course, several alpine training venues, a terrain park, and incredible all-mountain terrain. All these features, including unmatched, extreme hike-to terrain, contribute to the development of high level athletes. The Ski Club is located at the base of lift 7, within walking distance from anywhere in town with easy access to the mountain and training venues.
For student-athletes joining our community from afar, the Ski Academy arranges homestays with local host families. The Town of Telluride is small and welcoming. Ski and Snowboard Club and Telluride Mountain School are established communities within Telluride and warmly welcome new peers. An accessible public transportation system makes travel easy for students. We invite you to visit Telluride Mountain School to discuss options for your student-athlete.
