Rex Lybrand enters his twelfth year teaching and his third year as faculty at Telluride Mountain School. Having previously taught upper school Biology and Environmental Science at TMS, this year his focus is on 5th and 6th grade math and science.  Originally from Atlanta, GA, Rex taught high school science courses in suburban Atlanta for 4 years, while also coaching Tennis, Swimming, and Diving.  On spring weekends and all summer, Rex also served as an outdoor guide for High Country Adventures in Ocoee, TN, site of the Whitewater events for the Atlanta Olympic Games. In his capacity as an outdoor guide, Rex enjoyed sharing his love of nature with clients on rafting, mountain biking or rock climbing trips.

In 2004, building on his love of connecting people to nature, Rex journeyed to Bainbridge Island, WA to pursue a Master’s of Science, Biology for teacher’s degree. This unique program through the University of Washington was partially hosted at Islandwood, A School In the Woods on Bainbridge Island. Rex was immersed in a yearlong exploration of sustainability education teaching students art, science, and technology in a natural setting, leading to a graduate certificate in Education for Environment and Community.  The following year, Rex’s field research in toxicology measured the effects of carbamate pesticide use on endangered Oncorhynchus populations in estuarine environments.

Eager to get back in the classroom in a location that honors and celebrates the natural environment, Rex’s gaze fixed on the Town of Telluride and the rugged peaks of the San Juan’s.  The Telluride Mountain School’s emphasis on community building and experiential education are a perfect fit!
