Winter
Sports Program
The Winter Sports Program at the Mountain School
is a developmental program that accommodates all skill levels, from
the recreational skier/snowboarder to the aspiring Olympic competitor.
The school believes that by offering resources for the most driven
athletes to pursue their dreams, an environment is created in which
all students are challenged to put forth their best effort and achieve
their personal goals. The work ethic, commitment and time management
skills learned while participating in the Winter Sports Program
develop high achieving athletes, while teaching vital life skills
that all students can apply to any task in any arena in which they
become involved.
Students are on the mountain throughout the winter season, from
one to six days a week, depending on age and competitive interest.

Physical Education
Outside the winter season, the Mountain School provides a physical
education program that prepares students to excel in all sports
by improving strength and flexibility. Incorporating holistic training
methods, the program enhances the mind/body/spirit connection while
increasing each student's self-confidence, self-discipline, self-respect
and respect for others. Training methods include:
- Cardio and strength training: distance running, sprinting, plyometrics,
agility drills
- Flexibility training of mind and body: Yoga, Tai-Chi, Chi-Kung,
traditional stretching
- Breathing and meditation studies
- Academic studies: anatomy of bones and muscles, nutrition and
hydration awareness
- Non-School Athletic Programs
Mountain School students are encouraged to participate in athletic
programs offered by the local public school, sports clubs and the
Town of Telluride Parks and Recreation Department. Examples of athletic
programs in which students participate include soccer, basketball,
baseball/softball, football, volleyball, lacrosse, hockey, gymnastics,
martial arts and dance.
